Learning to be Present
Most people are always thinking about “what happened” (the past) or “what is going to happen” (the future). Slowing down the “mind-body” and focusing on “what IS happening” (the present) is the very essence of mindfulness meditation. It teaches the student to calm the body and deliberately focus their mind and their attention on the present moment.
Breathing is a Bridge
Breath is a bridge between the body-mind because it is subtler than the body and grosser than the mind. Breath combined with consciousness can help a student harmonize the conflicting unconscious forces that keep them from being relaxed and focused during daily life. Focusing on your breath cannot only eliminate stress in your body, but it can also help to eliminate the stress that is continually introduced by any fear, anger, or destructive thinking patterns. Merging awareness and breathing creates calmness in the body and clarity in the mind.
